The Condit Dam was breached today, releasing water from a 92-acre reservoir on the White Salmon River in Klickitat County.
The dam, constructed in 1913, was removed by owner and operator PacifiCorp instead of spending an estimated $100 million for fish passages that would have been required to renew its operating license to generate about 15 megawatts.
PacifiCorp spokesman Tom Gauntt expected that water would flow out of the breach at about 10,000 cubic feet per second.
Removal of the dam was spelled out in a 1999 settlement agreement with conservation groups, state agencies and the Yakama Nation.

•The concrete diversion dam spans 141 feet across the White Salmon river and is 125 feet tall.
•Over time, the cost of the dam removal has grown from $17 million to $32 million.
•Thirty-three miles of Salmon and steelhead habitat will be reopened.
•Water will pour through the breach until the spring of 2012, when work dismantling the dam begins.
•Sediment that has been trapped behind the dam is expected to pool up behind the Bonneville Dam in the Columbia River.
•Boaters should be cleared for access in August 2012.
